How would you describe yourself? If you haven’t seen the latest Dove Real Beauty video, take three minutes out of your day to watch it now (below). Dove campaigns have consistently inspired me over the past few years and their latest social experiment, Dove Real Beauty Sketches brought me to tears last night.
See how real women (unknowingly) described themselves to a forensic sketch artist. Then, see how other people described those same women based on a brief encounter with them. The result? Two sketches – one how the women saw themselves and the other how they were described by a complete stranger. Eye-opening…
Watch the video…
Tears. Tears of total empathy – I instantly connected with the women in this video. Perhaps these examples are more shocking than some, but the sad truth is, many women would see similar results – myself included. How would I describe my face?
- I’m pale.
- I have wide green eyes (that often have dark circles under them).
- I have thin lips.
- I have a dainty nose with a slight upturn.
- I have a cleft chin (aka “bum chin”).
- I have a long face and a strong jaw line.
- I have blemishes on my skin more often than I don’t.
- I blush and get splotchy a lot.
Do you think a sketch with these self-deprecating descriptors would look like me? Probably not.
I’m aware of my best physical qualities and sometimes I feel “beautiful” but my insecurities often push my confidence out of the way. Even on a good day, I’d probably be too afraid to say that I’m feeling beautiful, sexy or strong for fear of being judged as vain or arrogant. And therein lies the problem – we should feel good about ourselves (inside and out), voice it and embrace the confidence we see in others as well.
Yes, I know this is a well-executed advertising campaign, but Dove Real Beauty Sketches hit home for me, as I’m sure it has/will for many people. We ARE more beautiful than we think! Share this video – PAY YOURSELF and your loved ones a compliment and truly BELIEVE IT.
